The function of heart and blood circulation:
There are blood vessels that supplies blood to various parts of the body from heart
2 types of blood vessel:
Blood cannot remain constant. It should keep on moving from one part to another. This function is done by following
1.Arteries – Carry pure(oxygenated) blood from heart to other parts of our body. They have thick walls
2.Veins – Carry impure(de-oxygenated) blood from other parts of body to heart. They have thin walls
What is blood?
Blood is majorly of liquid component and an adult has 5 to 6 litres of blood.Blood transports substances like oxygen, carbon dioxide etc from one part of the body to other
2 components of blood:
1.Plasma – liquid part(90% made up of water) – 55% to 60%
2.Blood cells – 40% to 45%
a.Red Blood Cells(RBCs)
b.White Blood Cells(WBCs)
c.Platelets
RBCs:
1.Blood is red color due to this RBCs
2.They carry oxygen from lungs to other parts of our body and make a return trip by carring carbon dioxide to lungs where we exhale it
WBCs:
1.They are white colored
2.They kill bacteria and other microorganisms present in our body
Platelets:
1.Helps in blood clotting(When there is any injury, blood comes out of our body. After sometimes it is stopped)
Heart:
1.Situated in rib cage of the chest on the left side
2.Connected to arteries and veins
3.Made of cardiac muscles which work 24 hrs a day without getting tired
4.The normal heart beat is 60 to 90 per minute
4 chambers of heart:
We divide heart into 4 parts
1.2 Auricles(upper chambers of heart) – receive the blood
2.2 Ventricles(lower chambers of heart) – pump the blood outside the heart
Functioning of heart:
1.The left side of heart contains pure blood and right side contains impure blood and they dont mix with each other
2.When heart muscles contracts, they pump out pure blood from left ventricle to Aorta(largest artery in our body that is directly connected to heart)
3.Aorta supplies blood to all other body parts. When they receive blood, they use oxygen from them and release carbon dioxide. In other words, the pure blood has now become impure
4.Veins collect these carbon dioxide which present in the blood from tissues and other body parts and bring it to the right side of heart
5.Again, the deoxygenated(impure) is pumped from heart to lungs where we exhale the carbon dioxide
6.When we breath, the blood present in lungs absorb oxygen and moves from there to left auricle of heart
7.Then it moves to left ventricle thus completing 1 cycle. This is one complete heart beat and it takes 0.8 secs
Yogic Practice:
Coronary artery – supplies oxygen to the heart muscle.
1.When heart muscle relaxes, only then it receives oxygen and other nourishments. If they contract, they themselves receive only less oxygen but all other body parts receives fresh blood
2.So, the aim of yogic practises is to make our heart muscle relax by slowering the heart rate
3.Heart will also pull the blood from legs which is against gravity. So, inverted postures helps in doing so easily. But to note, high BP people should not practise inverted poses
4.In any yoga posture, the blood circulation happens better and removes impure blood from that part of body
